I had a blast watching this movie and can only hope the franchise continues like this. What a great movie! Covenant is a decent film. Covenant ticks all the boxes without particularly excelling at anything.

There is a decent amount of action, a smattering of gore, and a mediocre plot that keeps things chugging along.

It also lacks tension which is criminal for an Alien film. The only thing that gives Covenant any sort of individuality is with regards to the overarching mythology, which is moved on despite being under explained and a little bit odd.

This is a shame because I think with better writers they could have created a much stronger franchise. As it stands we have yet another mediocre film advancing a mediocre mythology.

December The colony ship Covenant is on its way to Origae-VI to establish a new settlement. A neutrino burst damages the ship in interstellar space and kills several crewmembers in hypersleep.

Awoken by the ship's synthetic, Walter, the crew effect repairs and discover a signal emanating from a nearby star system, from a planet that is a much closer match for colonisation.

Arriving on the planet, the crew find signs of life As the titles suggest, Prometheus was much more of a stand-alone movie sharing some DNA with the rest of the franchise but not focusing on the titular creature.

Covenant instead brings back the traditional xenomorph and establishes how it was created, whilst resolving some of the questions left dangling from Prometheus.

The result is an interesting hybrid movie which feels like it's trying to do several things simultaneously. It's trying to be an action-horror movie in its own right, a sequel to the more weighty concerns in Prometheus and a prequel to the events of the original movie.

Considering a prequel to the original movie, let alone two, was never narratively necessary, this was an controversial decision, but one that ultimately pays off.

Covenant has a familiar set-up: a starship picks up a distress call and diverts to investigate, finding a ruined alien ship harbouring something nasty, something which can infect humans and turn them into the incubators for monstrous creations.

Things quickly go wrong and mayhem results. The film borrows its basic structure from Alien, although it does mix the ingredients up to keep things more unpredictable without descending into the sheer randomness of Prometheus.

What helps keep all of this intriguing is that Ridley Scott is, even at the tail end of his career, still a masterful director with a tremendous sense of visual power and a strong design aesthetic.

The Covenant and the various locations in the film are all impressive pieces of design, if less striking than Prometheus.

Scott can also build tension like few other directors. This time around he's helped by a script which doesn't rely on the characters being quite as monumentally stupid as the ones in Prometheus, based on the fact these guys are engineers and colonists having to work way out of their comfort zones, rather than the alleged first contact specialists and biologists of the previous movie.

The film is paced pretty well, with the action unfolding continuously from the landing on the planet to the final confrontation with the creature, and handles a distinct shift in storytelling when David, the android from Prometheus, shows up and effectively shoehorns a follow-up story from that movie into the middle of this more traditional Alien tale.

Mostly propelled by Michael Fassbender's superb performance as both David and the Covenant's synthetic of the same class, Walter , this actually works to the film's benefit, providing a shift of pace and perspective which changes things up and keeps things fresh even as we begin to move away from the focus of Prometheus the Engineers and the black goo-ex-machina and back towards the franchise's star creature.

The final part of the movie - the human crewmembers versus the xenomorph with the androids serving as wild cards - is a bit more standardand and you can feel Scott checking out a little bit in the final battle with the creature in the Covenant's hanger bay which viewers familiar with both Alien and Aliens may find dully predictable , but it's all well-handled.

I'm a huge fan of the original three films But Covenant is just bad. Spoiler alert: The concept of "bad synthetic kills all the engineers and creates the classic Alien creature" just strikes me as lazy storytelling - a desperate attempt to link the original 4 films to Prometheus in one film.

I wish the makers would have taken more time perhaps 2 films to flesh out something more for serious science fiction fans. A wasted opportunity.

So disappointed with this, they had the whole franchise to build on and yet again we got really stupid astronauts who do the stupidest things.

Plot holes galore, broken science facts and imbecile characters just take away the immersion of what could have been a fantastic movie.

You just dont change directions in space and drive to the right to check out mysterious planets that havent been scanned before in charted space.

The public is already educated on fuel needs, insertion levels, burn rates etc to just buy that whole 'oh well, lets turn right and drive by eh' stuff.

Why use a humanoid to do that? Why arent the settlers trained properly, in such that when encountering a new planet with new microbes, environment, species, air etc that they dont run around smelling, poking, lazing around etc?

Why even send in humans to scout? Why send the entire on board team to scout???? Why does the medic act like a hair dresser and not do the basic quarantine procedure?

What is the back story of the original It's full of inconsistencies. This movie was, in a word, terrible. It's full of inconsistencies, dull characters, long periods of nothing much happening, and it doesn't really move the alien series forward at all; it's like an attempted remake of "Aliens" most of the time, but where you replace memorable characters like Ripley, struggling to overcome her nightmares from the first encounter, Hudson, the "surfer dude" marine, Hicks, even the semi-contemptible Gorman, all memorable characters, with Other than that they were just a bunch of spear carriers for the aliens to off.

The android duo seemed like an excuse for quoting Byron. Shaw is singing a 20th century country western tune? When did she turn into a cowgirl?

And a country tune is a perfect distress signal because? This system is, let us say, at least one AU from the ship. The pathogen is somehow converted from bomb canisters into mushrooms?

I know wheat. That the bald aliens seeded earth with humans and wheat crops? That David likes toasted oats so he planted some and it spread like weeds?

Or is it just a way to make the movie last 20 seconds longer? Instead it looks like someone excavated Pompeii. Where did the second alien that ended up on the ship come from?

And really, what was the point of that entire sequence? David pops little facehugger embryos out of his mouth and sticks them in with the human ones at the end of the movie.

What happened to the eggs? Can you just plan a facehugger embryo in a human, and it works the same as having a facehugger face hug you? Or do you hatch them from humans so they can face hug another human and create an alien?

Inquiring minds want to know. Thumbs way down on this one. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I'm quite annoyed with myself for listening to all the negative reviews.

I'm a big fan of the Alien films and sci fi generally. My loss. I also don't understand all the criticism that the crew made outrageously stupid decisions.

Probably the only one that really stands out for me is not wearing any kind of protective breathing apparatus when landing on an alien unexplored world.

Did they never watch War of the Worlds! Alright the plot is not going to win any Oscar nonminations and as much as we would love it to be, it won't entering the list of cult sci-fi classics.

But in my opinion it's certainly not deserving of the many negative reviews out there on the internet and delivers a nice tie in with Prometheus and the whole unfolding backdrop to the story.

Watch it and make your own mind up. It actually get s a 4. I don't get where all the hate for this movie comes from.

I also don't recognise the story flaws or stupid decisions made by the crew the other reviewers keep mentioning. In fact I found the story and script of this movie fantastic and vastly improved over Prometheus.

Also the crew is much more relatable and the movie itself much better cast. Gone is Prometheus' sterile look and the new military look suits this movie extremely well.

Jed Kurzel delivered a great score contrary to Streitenfeld's drab contribution to Prometheus. I had a blast watching this movie and can only hope the franchise continues like this.

Less forgivable is a blatant sequel hook which, given Covenant's modest box office performance, may have been a bit optimistic.

As it stands there's still a lot of unanswered questions on how the events of Prometheus and Covenant lead into Alien, but some of the revelations in Covenant make this perhaps a more interesting question than it appeared from Prometheus alone.
